The Wasmuth Laboratory Team

Calla Xu

Calla is an undergraduate at the University of California Berkeley majoring in Chemical Engineering. A San Antonio native, she has spent her last two summers in the Wasmuth Lab as a protein engineer and biochemist.

Humberto Suarez

Humberto Suarez received his BS from Texas State University in San Marcos. A San Antonio native, he started his professional career working at Southwest Research Institute for 4 years, then at a private laboratory here in San Antonio for another 4 before joining the Wasmuth Lab in 2022 as a research scientist. Humberto is interested in how alterations in protein structure can cause disease. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, fishing, kayaking, playing video games, and spending time with his wife and daughter.

Eliza Ruben

Eliza joined the Wasmuth and Olsen Laboratories as a research scientist in 2022. She has many years experience in structural biology and protein biochemistry, and is an expert in X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and all things computational. A true team player and scholar, she loves to teach and share her love of structural biology with others.

Irshad Ahmad

Md Irshad Ahmad received his M. Tech in Bioinformatics from Hyderabad Central University and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Aligarh Muslim University, India where he specialized in protein biochemistry and X-ray crystallography. Irshad joined the Wasmuth / Olsen labs as a post-doctoral fellow in 2023, where he is excited to develop his skillsets in structural biology and biochemistry to solve important questions in cancer biology.  Outside of science, he loves to spend time with his family and friends.

Madisyn Johnson

Madisyn Johnson joined the Wasmuth laboratory as a pre-doctoral student in early 2023. A San Antonio native,  earned her B.S. in biochemistry from Texas State University. She is interested in understanding the biophysical and structural properties of proteins and nucleic acids that mediate their functions in normal cells and disease. Madisyn enjoys baking, needlecrafts, and trying new restaurants in her free time.

Xiangru Zhao

Xiangru Zhao received her BS in biology from the University of San Antonio. She joined the Wasmuth lab in May of 2022 (arriving before Elizabeth!), and jointly manages Dr. Shaun Olsen’s laboratory next door. Xiangru is an expert in mammalian cell culture and cancer biology, but also now enjoys learning about recombinant protein expression and structural biology in the Wasmuth / Olsen laboratories. In her free time, Xiangru likes to travel, cook, and taste local foods when visiting new places.

Vinh Le

Vinh Le recently obtained his B.S. from Soka University where he used cellular and molecular biology techniques to study how protein sequence and domain structure impacts function in cells. Vinh will be spending a year in the Wasmuth laboratory developing his skillsets in advanced microscopy, cellular and molecular biology.

Tanisha Sharma

Tanisha Sharma is a joint post-doctoral fellow in the labs of Dr. Wasmuth and Dr. Patrick Sung. Tanisha received her Masters in Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and recently obtained her PhD in Biotechnology from the National Centre for Cell Science in Pune, India, where she studied how various post-translational modifications change the functions of key proteins involved in cancer. She will continue to investigate how changes in protein structure and function impact mechanisms of cancer development and response to current therapies.

A core principle of our laboratory is that big discoveries often require unconventional thinking.

The Wasmuth Laboratory is a multidisciplinary team of researchers with a wide range of scientific and cultural backgrounds. We believe that maintaining a diverse and collegial environment is key to fostering creativity, collaboration, and innovation."
